Using the Location Manager

If you learn to use the Location Manager, you can create sets that you can switch to easily that will have your Mac optimized for the location.

First, we will create AppleTalk and TCP/IP configurations that we will use in our Location Manager sets. Make sure nothing else is running while you are doing this or you will have problems.

1. Open Control Panels/AppleTalk.

Go to Edit/User Mode. Change the mode to Advanced.

Go to File/Configurations.

Your AppleTalk is probably on. Rename the Default one to AppleTalk On.

Now Duplicate it and call this new one AppleTalk Off.

Make AppleTalk Off active. Close panel.

Back at the AppleTalk (AppleTalk Off), select Options.

Select Make AppleTalk inactive.

Close and save.

Yes, AppleTalk is now off. Don't worry. We'll change it all in the end.

Continue to the next page.

2. Open Control Panel/TCP/IP.

Go to Edit/User Mode. Change the mode to Advanced.

Select Options and make sure Active is selected and Load only when needed is not selected.

Go to File/Configurations. Say yes if it asks you to save.

There will probably bea  default and IBM config configuration.

Rename the default to TCP/IP On.

Now Duplicate it and call this one TCP/IP Off.

Select IBM config and make it active.

Change the settings to match those above.

Go to File/Configurations. Say yes when it asks you to save.

Make the TCP/IP Off active.

Select Options and select Inactive. Close.

Close and save. Yes, it is inactive. Leave it that way.

3. Open Control Panel/Location Manager. You should also have this on your Control Strip which will make it much easier to change between configurations.

Go to File and select New Location.

Call this Networking On.

Go to File and select Rename Location.

Select the default and rename it Networking Off.

Your current location should be Networking Off. If not, change it.

Make sure Edit location is Networking Off.

Check and select AppleTalk & TCP/IP. They should be AppleTalk Off and TCP/IP Off.

Click Apply.

Change Edit Location to Networking On.

Check and select AppleTalk & TCP/IP.

Select Edit.

Open AppleTalk. Do not make active if it asks you.

Go to File/Configuration. Make AppleTalk On active.

Close and save.

Open TCP/IP. Do not make active if it asks you.

Go to File/Configuration. Make TCP/IP On active.

Close and save.

Apply.

Close and save everything. Don't change locations.

You now have two locations to easily switch between.

Networking On for when you are in the office and need to connect to everything.

Networking Off for when you are elsewhere or when you don't want networking.

The IBM config is activated automatically by the dialer and is switched back to whatever configuration you had when it is done.

Have fun making your own locations now!
